This Anti-Corrosive Parking Brake Rebuild Kit is designed to restore and protect the parking brake system on 1965-1982 Chevrolet Corvettes. The kit replaces worn or corroded springs, retainers, clips, boots and other hardware with corrosion-resistant components (stainless and zinc-plated where applicable) to ensure reliable engagement, smooth operation and long-term durability. Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 1-2 hours
Instructions:
- Prepare vehicle: park on level ground, chock front wheels, and engage the parking brake. Loosen rear wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise and support: jack up the rear of the car and support securely on jack stands. Remove the rear wheels.
- Access parking brake assembly: remove the brake rotor/drum hat or caliper (depending on your setup) to expose the parking brake shoes and hardware. Keep track of fasteners.
- Document orientation: take photos or notes of the existing spring and clip layout to ensure correct reassembly.
- Remove old hardware: apply penetrating oil as needed and remove old springs, retainers, clips, boots and any corroded hardware. Carefully disconnect the parking brake cable from the lever/pivot.
- Clean and inspect: clean mating surfaces, backing plate, and cable ends with brake cleaner and a wire brush. Inspect cables, shoes, and related components for excessive wear—replace if necessary.
- Install new components: assemble the new anti-corrosive springs, clips, retainers and boots from the kit in the same orientation as the originals. Use needle-nose pliers or the appropriate tool to seat springs and clips properly.
- Lubricate pivots: apply a light smear of high-temp brake grease to pivot points and cable contact areas to prevent binding and reduce wear.
- Reassemble brakes: reinstall the rotor/drum hat or caliper, ensuring all fasteners are tightened to factory torque specifications. Reinstall the wheels and torque lug nuts to specification.
- Adjust cable tension: adjust the parking brake cable per the Corvette service manual so the lever has the correct number of clicks and the brakes hold firmly without dragging.
- Test operation: lower the car, test the parking brake on a gentle incline and verify secure holding. Drive at low speed to confirm no unusual noises and recheck adjustment after initial use.
- Safety note: if you find damaged shoes, wheel cylinders, cables or excessive corrosion, replace those components or consult a professional mechanic. If uncertain about any step, seek professional assistance.
