The APCO style cast brass body has a tension spring that is adjusted with a special screw plug. It holds the wishbone to the bottom of the oil pan, and helps secure the front axle and eliminate shimmy and wobble. The cap applies continuous pressure, and takes up play. Be sure to sufficiently grease it when installing.
