Definition and Function
On the 1979 Trans Am, the Shaker hood features a steel hood panel with a pre-cut opening in the center that allows the Shaker scoop to protrude. The scoop is mounted directly to the engine's air cleaner, not the hood, so it moves?or ?shakes??with the engine's movement. Its purpose is to draw in cooler, denser outside air directly into the carburetor for better combustion and performance.
Design Features
Steel hood with factory-formed bracing and cowl venting
Fiberglass or molded plastic Shaker scoop, often styled with engine callouts (e.g., ?6.6 LITRE? or ?T/A 6.6?)
Scoop design slightly sleeker compared to early 1970?76 versions, in line with late 1970s styling changes
Compatible with Pontiac 400, Oldsmobile 403, and other performance engines offered in 1979
Functional on some models, decorative (non-functional) on others, depending on factory setup and emissions requirements
Performance & Legacy
For 1979, the Shaker hood was both a visual performance cue and, on certain engines, a true cold-air induction system. It remains one of the most recognizable elements of the Trans Am's muscle car image, often associated with the ?Smokey and the Bandit? era styling.
