A look at the making of the Ford Mustang

The 1960s were a time of youth and self expression. Naturally, Ford looked to capitalize on this new spirited generation with the Mustang. The vehicle went through many different designs—this is a glimpse into the many iterations of the first Mustang.

The Mustang's first design came in the form of a small, mid-engine, two seater concept car in 1962. It was a part of the Fairlane Group in their attempts to design a new sports car, to compete with the Corvette, and to generate buzz around the name. Little besides the name is related to the Mustang's debut model.

The Mustang went through a number of name changes internally during its initial design phases. One of the first designs was a hatchback, that featured rear-facing back seats. Thankfully that reality never came to pass, and the Allegro Concept opted for a trunk, and front facing back seats.

Ford was experimenting with ideas on how to make the upcoming vehicle cheaper, which resulted in a number of drafts to make the car smaller and more compact, thus inspiring the early years of the Thunderbird.

The original Mustang we all know and love, made for the expanding family sizes of the mid 1960s. This concept came about to capitalize on the growing family car market, but it was ultimately scrapped in favor of style and sportiness.
