This tailgate weatherstrip seal kit is a direct-fit replacement for 1978-1987 Chevrolet El Camino tailgates. Instructions:
- Lower the tailgate and remove the old weatherstrip by prying out any retainers and pulling the rubber free.
- Clean the mounting channel and surrounding metal with a rag and solvent to remove old adhesive, dirt, and grease; allow to dry.
- Test-fit the new weatherstrip around the tailgate to confirm orientation and corner alignment before applying adhesive.
- Apply a thin, even bead of weatherstrip adhesive to the channel or the back of the new seal according to the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.
- Seat the weatherstrip into the channel, pressing firmly along the length to fully engage the retainer; use pliers as needed for snug fit at corners and ends.
- Wipe away any excess adhesive immediately and allow the adhesive to cure for the recommended time (usually several hours) before closing the tailgate.
- Check tailgate closure and adjust seating if necessary; allow full cure time before exposure to moisture.
