This one-wire backup lamp socket is a direct replacement for 1967-1981 Pontiac Firebird tail light assemblies, restoring reliable electrical contact and safe reverse-light operation. Designed to secure the backup bulb and wiring, the socket resists heat and corrosion for long life and consistent illumination. Ideal for restoration projects or routine maintenance, it provides a durable, easy-to-install solution to replace brittle or damaged original sockets and eliminate intermittent lighting issues.
Features:
  • Fits 1967-1981 Pontiac Firebird models (direct-fit).
  • One-wire socket designed for standard backup/back-up bulbs and simple wiring connections.
  • High-temperature nylon housing with brass contacts for corrosion resistance and long service life.
  • Restoration-grade replacement to restore proper reverse light function and improve safety.
  • Plug-and-play design for quick swap-out; reduces vibration and poor contact issues.
  • Affordable, reliable way to replace cracked or melted original sockets and maintain OEM appearance.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 2/5
  • Estimated time: 15-30 minutes
Suggested Tools:
  • flathead screwdriver
  • needle-nose pliers
  • wire stripper
  • crimping tool
  • heat shrink or electrical tape
  • multimeter or test light
  • safety gloves
Instructions:
  1. Safety first: disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent shorts.
  2. Remove the tail light lens and access the existing backup lamp socket according to vehicle trim (usually by removing screws or clips).
  3. Pull the old socket from the housing and note which wire is the backup feed. Use a multimeter or test light if unsure.
  4. If reusing existing wiring, release the old socket lead from the harness connector or cut the lead close to the socket if necessary.
  5. Strip ~1/4" of insulation from the vehicle wire and the new socket lead.
  6. Join wires using crimp connectors or solder. If crimping, use a quality crimp and cover the connection with heat shrink or electrical tape to protect against moisture.
  7. Seat the new socket into the tail lamp housing until it locks in place; ensure the bulb is seated correctly in the socket.
  8. Reinstall the tail light lens and secure any screws or clips.
  9. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and test the backup lights by placing the vehicle in reverse (with brake applied or engine off following vehicle safety procedures).
  10. Verify the socket is secure and that wiring is routed away from heat sources or moving parts before finishing.
