Inner tie rod end (right/left hand) for 1965–1972 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury models designed to replace worn steering linkage components. This precision-machined rod end secures the inner portion of the tie rod assembly to the steering rack, maintaining alignment, reducing play, and restoring crisp steering response. Constructed from hardened steel with corrosion-resistant finishes and durable bearing surfaces, it offers long-lasting reliability for classic vehicle restoration or routine maintenance. Easy to install with common garage tools, it’s an essential component for safe, predictable steering and improved tire wear.
Features:
- Fits 1965–1972 Ford / Lincoln / Mercury vehicles (inner tie rod end, right and left hand applications).
- Hardened steel construction for strength and long service life.
- Secures steering linkage, reduces play, and restores steering alignment.
- Corrosion-resistant finish helps protect against rust and road contaminants.
- Direct replacement for worn or damaged inner tie rod ends in restoration projects.
- Simple installation using common tools; designed for dependable, everyday use.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45–90 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake, and chock rear wheels.
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts, raise vehicle with a jack, and support securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
- Locate the inner tie rod end on the steering rack and mark the current position on the outer tie rod (count turns or mark thread engagement) to preserve approximate alignment.
- Loosen and remove the clamp or retaining nut securing any steering rack boot and slide the boot back to expose the inner tie rod.
- Use a tie rod end puller or separator to disconnect the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle if necessary, then unthread the outer tie rod from the inner to gain access.
- Hold the steering rack shaft and use the appropriate tool to unthread the inner tie rod from the rack. Inspect rack threads and sealing surfaces for damage; clean as needed.
- Install the new inner tie rod by threading it onto the rack to the marked position (or to the same number of turns), ensuring it seats fully and threads smoothly. Replace any racks seals or boots if worn.
- Reposition and secure the steering rack boot with its clamp or retainer. Reconnect the outer tie rod to the inner tie rod and then to the steering knuckle, torquing fasteners to factory specifications.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, torque the lug nuts to spec, and perform a preliminary steering check for free movement and correct travel.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed after installation to ensure proper steering geometry and prevent uneven tire wear.
