Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes (per side)
Instructions:
- Park on level ground, engage parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly, raise the vehicle with a jack, and support securely on jack stands.
- Remove the front wheel to access the tie rod end.
- Mark the position of the old outer tie rod relative to the inner tie rod or measure the exposed thread count to preserve alignment.
- Loosen the jam nut securing the outer tie rod to the inner tie rod.
- Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut (or nut) on the tie rod stud.
- Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a tie rod end puller or pickle fork, taking care not to damage surrounding components.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod the measured number of turns (or to the marked position) and remove the old part.
- Screw the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the same position/number of turns, then tighten the jam nut against it.
- Insert the tie rod stud into the steering knuckle, install and torque the nut to the vehicle manufacturer's specification, and secure with a new cotter pin if applicable.
- If the part is greaseable, apply grease via the zerk fitting until fresh grease appears at the boot.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to spec.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed after installation to ensure proper toe settings and prevent tire wear.
