Front upper ball joint (right or left) designed for 1979-1991 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles. This replacement ball joint secures the upper control arm to the steering knuckle, maintaining proper suspension geometry and steering responsiveness. Built for durability and smooth articulation, it restores stable handling, reduces steering play, and prevents premature tire wear. Ideal for suspension restoration or routine maintenance, it helps return worn front-end components to factory-like performance with straightforward installation for experienced DIYers or professional technicians.
Features:
  • Fits 1979-1991 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury front upper ball joint applications (right or left hand).
  • Constructed from hardened steel with a corrosion-resistant finish for long service life.
  • Secures the upper control arm to the steering knuckle, preserving alignment and steering precision.
  • Reduces vibration and steering play, helping prevent uneven tire wear.
  • Pre-assembled with grease fitting (where applicable) for easier maintenance and lubrication.
  • Direct-fit replacement for restoration and routine front-end repair projects.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 3/5
  • Estimated time: 1–2 hours per side
Suggested Tools:
  • Floor jack and jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Socket and ratchet set
  • Combination wrenches
  • Ball joint press or C-clamp with adapters
  • Hammer and pickle fork (optional)
  • Torque wrench
  • Pry bar
  • Grease gun (if fitting has grease zerk)
Instructions:
  1. Park vehicle on level ground, set parking brake and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
  2. Loosen lug nuts on the front wheel, lift the vehicle with a floor jack and support on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
  3. Remove any components obstructing access to the upper ball joint (e.g., brake caliper bracket, sway bar link) as required.
  4. Separate the upper control arm from the steering knuckle: remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the ball joint stud, then use a ball joint separator or pickle fork to disengage the stud from the knuckle.
  5. Support the upper control arm and remove any retaining fasteners or snap rings that hold the ball joint in the control arm.
  6. Press out the old ball joint using a ball joint press or appropriate C-clamp adapter. Clean the control arm bore and inspect for damage or excessive wear.
  7. Press the new ball joint into the control arm until it seats fully. Install any retaining clip or snap ring if required.
  8. Reinstall the upper control arm stud into the steering knuckle, tighten the castle nut to the manufacturer's torque specification, and install a new cotter pin.
  9. Reassemble any removed components, pump grease into the fitting if equipped, and reinstall the wheel. Torque lug nuts to specification.
  10. Lower the vehicle, perform a final torque check on all fasteners, and have alignment checked/adjusted as needed before driving.
