Inner tie rod end (early straight-rod design) for 1979–1998 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Isuzu and Oldsmobile models. This replacement inner tie rod restores proper steering linkage alignment and secure connection between the steering rack and outer tie rod, helping eliminate play, wandering, and uneven tire wear. Constructed for longevity and reliable fitment, it’s ideal for steering system repairs or restorations where the early straight tie-rod design is required. Durable construction resists corrosion and delivers consistent steering response for safe, predictable handling.
Features:
- Fits 1979–1998 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Isuzu and Oldsmobile models with the early straight inner tie rod design.
- Inner tie rod end — available for right-hand or left-hand application to match vehicle steering orientation.
- Robust metal construction with corrosion-resistant finish for long service life.
- Precisely machined threads and taper for secure, factory-style fit and reliable steering feel.
- Restores steering alignment, reduces play and wandering, and prevents premature tire wear.
- Direct replacement part for restoration, maintenance, or repair of vintage GM/Isuzu steering systems.
- Simple installation with common tools; suitable for DIY mechanics and professional shops.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Safely raise vehicle and support on jack stands; remove the front wheel to access the tie rod assembly.
- Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod at the steering rack to free the inner rod for removal.
- Remove the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a tie rod puller or pickle fork, taking care not to damage other components.
- Mark or measure the number of turns and position of the outer/inner tie rod connection to preserve alignment settings.
- Unscrew the inner tie rod from the steering rack using the appropriate wrench or inner tie rod tool; apply penetrating oil if seized.
- Compare the new inner tie rod to the old unit to confirm correct straight-rod early design and thread orientation (right- or left-hand).
- Install the new inner tie rod by threading it into the steering rack to the same position/turns measured earlier; tighten jam nut to specified torque.
- Reconnect the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle and torque the ball joint nut to manufacturer specs; reinstall any cotter pins if required.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to spec.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed after installation to ensure proper steering geometry and even tire wear.
