Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes
Instructions:
- Park on a level surface, engage parking brake, and loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the vehicle with a jack and secure on jack stands. Remove the front wheel.
- Locate the outer left tie rod end at the steering knuckle and inner tie rod connection.
- Use a marker or paint pen to scribe the position of the old tie rod on the threaded portion to preserve alignment as closely as possible.
- Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod and count or measure thread turns to assist in matching length for the new part.
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut securing the tie rod stud to the steering knuckle.
- Separate the tie rod stud from the knuckle using a tie rod end puller or a pickle fork and hammer; avoid damaging the knuckle.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod, keeping track of the number of turns or the marked position.
- Install the new outer left tie rod end by threading it onto the inner tie rod to the previously recorded position or same number of turns.
- Insert the tie rod stud into the steering knuckle, install and torque the castle nut to manufacturer specification, and secure with a new cotter pin if required.
- Tighten the jam nut against the new tie rod end to secure the assembly.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to spec.
- Because tie rod replacement affects alignment, have a professional wheel alignment performed to final specifications before driving.
