Front lower left-hand ball joint for 1995-2004 Toyota Tacoma designed to restore safe steering and suspension geometry. Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 60-120 minutes
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, set parking brake, and chock rear wheels.
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly, then raise the vehicle and support on jack stands; remove the front left wheel.
- Remove cotter pin and castle nut from the outer tie rod end; separate the tie rod end from the knuckle using a tie rod puller or hammer strike on the knuckle.
- Remove the brake caliper and rotor as needed to access the lower control arm; support caliper to avoid stress on the brake hose.
- Disconnect sway bar end link and any ABS or sensor wiring routed near the control arm if necessary.
- Remove the lower control arm-to-ball joint retaining nut and press or separate the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle using a ball joint separator or hammer and punch.
- Use a ball joint press to press the old ball joint out of the control arm. Apply penetrating oil and ensure safe, steady pressure throughout the press operation.
- Clean the control arm bore of debris and inspect for damage; if the control arm is worn or cracked, replace the control arm instead of installing a new ball joint.
- Press the new ball joint into the control arm to the specified depth. Install the retaining clip or circlip if provided.
- Reinstall the control arm and seat the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle. Torque the ball joint nut to manufacturer specification and install a new cotter pin if applicable.
- Reattach tie rod end, sway bar links, brakes, and any removed wiring. Torque all fasteners to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to spec. Test drive and have a professional wheel alignment performed to ensure proper tracking and tire wear.
