Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park on level ground, engage parking brake, loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise vehicle and support with jack stands; remove the front wheel on the side being serviced.
- Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle; spray penetrating oil on fasteners if needed.
- Mark the position of the threaded portion of the inner tie rod relative to the old tie rod end (count turns or use a marker) to preserve alignment as much as possible.
- Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castellated nut securing the tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
- Use a tie rod end puller or a pickle fork to separate the tie rod end from the knuckle. Avoid striking the steering arm directly if possible.
- Unscrew the tie rod end from the inner tie rod the same number of turns you counted when removing to maintain approximate toe alignment.
- Install the new tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the marked position, ensuring thread engagement is correct and straight.
- Insert the tie rod stud into the steering knuckle and hand-tighten the castellated nut, then torque to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification and insert a new cotter pin.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, torque lug nuts to spec, and have a professional wheel alignment performed to ensure correct steering geometry.
