Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake and loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the front of the vehicle with a jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
- Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle. Clean area to access jam nut and cotter pin.
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut or nut securing the tie rod to the knuckle.
- Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod so the outer tie rod can be unscrewed. Mark the position of the outer tie rod on the threaded section or measure distance from a reference point to preserve alignment.
- Separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle using a tie-rod puller or carefully with a hammer to dislodge the taper. Remove the outer tie rod by unthreading it from the inner tie rod.
- Thread the new outer tie rod onto the inner tie rod to the previously marked position or measured length. Tighten the jam nut to secure.
- Insert tie rod into the knuckle, tighten the castle nut to the manufacturer torque specification, and install a new cotter pin if applicable.
- Verify steering wheel position and free play; lower vehicle and torque wheel lug nuts to spec.
- Because exact toe alignment may have changed, have a professional wheel alignment performed after installation to ensure proper tire wear and steering behavior.
